Grade 11: College Application Process
SAT preparation, FAFSA, and college planning
SAT Preparation
Junior year is the ideal time to take the SAT. Use your College Board account (created in 9th grade) to:
- Register for the SAT
- Access free SAT practice through Khan Academy
- Review your PSAT scores and personalized study plan
- Explore SAT Subject Tests if required by your target colleges
FAFSA — Free Application for Federal Student Aid
Begin familiarizing yourself with the FAFSA process. While you will formally complete it in 12th grade, understanding the requirements early helps you and your family prepare:
- Learn about financial aid types (grants, scholarships, loans, work-study)
- Gather necessary documents (tax returns, income information)
- Understand the FAFSA timeline and deadlines
College Planning
Start building your college list and planning your applications:
- Research colleges that match your academic and personal goals
- Visit college campuses (virtually or in person)
- Identify teachers and mentors for recommendation letters
- Begin drafting your personal statement or college essay
- Look into scholarship opportunities
