Grade 10: College Application Process

Exploring your options — HiSET Proficiency & GED pathways

California High School Proficiency Exam (HiSET)

The California High School Proficiency Exam is an option for students who wish to demonstrate high school-level proficiency. Key details:

  • Must be at least 16 years old on the date of the test
  • Must have been enrolled in 10th grade for at least one academic year, or will have completed one academic year of enrollment at the time of the test
  • Verification of eligibility is done by the school
  • The certificate of proficiency is equivalent to a high school diploma by California state law

GED (General Educational Development)

The GED is another pathway for students to earn a high school equivalency credential. It consists of four subject tests:

  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Reasoning Through Language Arts
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Students should speak with their counselor about whether the HiSET or GED pathway is the best fit for their goals.

Important Note

Passing the HiSET or GED does not exempt a minor from California compulsory education laws. Students under 18 who pass must still comply with state attendance requirements unless they meet other exemption criteria.
