digiTIES Responsible Use of AI – Policy DRAFT (2025)

Policy Overview

digiTIES recognizes that Artificial Intelligence is an essential tool in modern learning that can enhance thinking, expand creativity, and support personalized growth when used responsibly. This policy establishes expectations for student use of AI tools while upholding academic integrity, digital citizenship, and high-quality online learning.

Purpose & Statement

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Establish clear guidelines for responsible AI use
  • Protect academic integrity
  • Develop students’ critical thinking and digital literacy
  • Align AI use with Islamic values of honesty and trustworthiness
  • Ensure that technology supports rather than replaces learning

Scope & Who This Applies To

This policy applies to all enrolled students in Grades 1–12 and all staff members responsible for assignment design, instruction, and academic integrity oversight.

Philosophy on AI Use

AI can support learning but never replace it. Students may use AI to strengthen understanding, enhance communication, and support learning, particularly when working with unfamiliar vocabulary, complex instructions, or language barriers. However, AI is a tool to support the learning process, not a shortcut to avoid learning.

Appropriate AI Uses

The following are appropriate uses of AI tools in academic work:

  • Clarifying complex instructions or concepts
  • Supporting brainstorming and idea generation
  • Checking work for clarity, grammar, and structure
  • Expanding understanding through examples and guided inquiry
  • Translating or explaining difficult vocabulary

AI as Support, Not Replacement (Policy Rule 1)

AI may support brainstorming, idea generation, vocabulary building, and planning. However, AI may NOT produce final answers, essays, or solutions submitted as original work. Students must complete final work independently unless the teacher explicitly specifies otherwise in the assignment instructions.

Transparency & Academic Integrity (Policy Rule 2)

All AI use must be openly disclosed. Failure to disclose AI use constitutes academic dishonesty. Submitting AI-generated work as one’s own is treated as a violation of academic integrity under this policy and STU-002 (Student Behavior & Discipline Policy).

Progressive Consequences for AI-Related Academic Integrity Violations

Consequences follow the same progressive framework as the Academic Integrity & Plagiarism section of STU-002:

Instance

Consequence

1st

Student must redo the assignment. Teacher contacts student and parent/guardian to discuss the violation and expectations.

2nd

Student must redo or complete an alternative assignment. Student completes plagiarism/AI integrity training. Parent/guardian and student sign an Honor Code agreement.

3rd

Student must redo with limited credit. Originality reports required for future submissions. Parent–student–teacher–administration conference held.

4th (same course)

Student receives a failing grade for the course. Re-enrollment in the course is required at the student’s expense.

4th (across courses)

Academic suspension pending administrative review.

All violations are documented in digiTIES SIS and reported to administration. Repeated violations may result in additional disciplinary action under the STU-002 behavior framework.

Teacher Permission Required (Policy Rule 3)

AI use requires explicit teacher permission. Teachers may restrict AI entirely for certain tasks (quizzes, exams, discussion posts, presentations). Teachers may permit AI only at certain stages of work (idea generation but not drafting). Assignment instructions will clearly state whether AI use is allowed and under what conditions.

Staff Responsibilities

Teachers and staff have the following responsibilities:

  • Design assignments with clear AI expectations and usage guidelines
  • Communicate explicitly whether AI use is permitted, restricted, or required
  • Monitor for AI-generated submissions and address violations
  • Provide digital citizenship and academic integrity instruction
  • Document and report violations to administration

Student Responsibilities

Students have the following responsibilities:

  • Use AI only as permitted by the teacher
  • Disclose all AI use in assignments and work
  • Complete final work independently unless instructed otherwise
  • Ask the teacher when unsure whether AI use is allowed
  • Treat AI as a learning support, not a replacement for learning
